Danish director Thomas Vinterberg is one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. A leading figure in contemporary European cinema, his work is known for pushing boundaries while remaining emotionally grounded. In the mid-1990s, he co-founded Dogme 95, a radical filmmaking manifesto that called for a return to cinematic purity, eliminating technical gimmicks to focus on performance, storytelling, and emotional truth.

In 1998, Festen (The Celebration) became the first official Dogme 95 film. The brutal honesty of the film earned the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and immediately established Vinterberg as a filmmaker unafraid to confront the complexity of human nature.

Since then, his films have consistently explored themes of vulnerability, collective guilt, and social tension with precision and depth. The Hunt (Jagten), driven by an intense performance from Mads Mikkelsen, portrays the devastating impact of suspicion in a small community. The Commune turns its lens on the idealism and disillusionment of communal life in 1970s Denmark.

Vinterberg’s global breakthrough came in 2020 with Another Round (Drunk), which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature. What begins as a dark comedy about midlife malaise and alcohol experimentation evolves into a powerful reflection on aging, identity, and the hidden struggles in everyday life.

In 2024, Vinterberg directed Families Like Ours, a drama that continues his exploration of family relationships and social divides. Set against the backdrop of an environmental crisis in Denmark, the series examines exile and forced migration with the same emotional honesty that defines his film work. Shifting to a multi-episode format allows him to expand his storytelling while retaining his distinctive style.

Families Like Ours has been sold to over 40 countries, including BBC in the UK, CANAL+ in France, Poland, and across Eastern Europe, as well as ARD Degeto in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Also on TV4 in Sweden and Finland, NRK in Norway, RÚV in Iceland, Movistar Plus+ in Spain, NOS and TVCine in Portugal, NPO3 in the Netherlands, BeTV in Belgium, LGU+ in South Korea, CBC Gem in Canada, SBS in Australia, Rialto in New Zealand – and more to come.
